The "Young Fundamentalism"

In the last several months, a group of discontented young men have begun to make themselves heard. While not a cohesive group in any sense, this collection of mostly younger men who have grown up in Fundamentalism has expressed a desire to reform the Fundamental movement. Some of these men are younger men, but not all. This "young fundamentalism" is a very broad and loose coalition. I enjoy the fellowship of several outstanding pastors in the Ohio Bible Fellowship , many of whom are both "young" and "Fundamentalists" in every sense of the word. The discontent that many of these "young fundamentalists" are voicing is not shared by the young men in our fellowship. Due Process?

I should have seen that one coming. Several months ago, the internet was abuzz with a self-proclaimed non-fundamentalist's suggestions for Fundamentalism . As an outsider, he suggested several points in which he felt we would do well to improve. While I was a little puzzled why a non-fundamentalist would even care, I did spend some time thinking about his points. One of his critiques of Fundamentalism was that there was a lack of "due process." By this, I understood him to mean that it's basically "one strike and you're out." His impression was that Fundamentalists are quick to cut off anyone who disagrees with them or who perhaps demonstrates a lack of judgment or discernment. In theory, I agreed with him: separation is not punitive; rather, it should be exercised with the hope of restoration ( Gal 6:1 ). Fundamentalism and Social Action

Discontent is increasingly heard in another area of Fundamentalism: its social action (or more specifically, its lack thereof). Fundamentalism has been charged (and rightly so in some cases) with isolationism. In its attempt to separate from the world, it has retreated and become "other-worldly," according to critics. This in turn has caused its evangelism to stagnate and stumble, according to this line of thinking. I want to examine this charge along four lines. The History of Evangelicalism's Social Program First, this charge is not a new one. Carl F. H. Henry made this exact complaint in 1947, with his short book, The Uneasy Conscience of Modern Fundamentalism . His argument is exactly as I have outlined above: Fundamentalism, with its insistence upon ecclesiastical separation from unbelief and its personal separation from the world, had become increasingly isolated from the world that it intended to reach with the Gospel.
