Following a Good Example

Yesterday evening, our pastor preached on the submission of wives to their husbands from 1 Peter 3:1––6. He made an excellent point that I had never noticed before. Clearly, Peter calls on the women who were reading his letter to submit to their husbands, following the example of Sarah and the other godly women of the Old Testament (vv. 5––6).

This is well and good, and what a blessing to follow in the footsteps of such godly women of faith. But first and foremost, a woman who submits to her husband is following the example of Jesus Christ. Verse one begins with "Likewise, wives. . ." referring back to the previous paragraph (2:18––25). Jesus Christ is the ultimate example of humility and submission, even in the face of persecution and suffering.
